Nottingham Forest clawed their way to a precious Premier League point on Saturday, with Neco Williams’ clinical second-half strike securing a 1-1 draw against Aston Villa at the City Ground.
The result, coupled with news of Tottenham’s concurrent defeat at Sunderland, propelled Forest three points clear of the relegation zone—a margin met with roars of relief from the home support.
Villa, who could face Forest again in a Europa League semi-final later this month, departed frustrated after squandering a series of golden opportunities to claim all three points.
Forest opened the scoring in unfortunate fashion. A Murillo own goal handed Villa the lead, but the hosts responded with grit. Their equalizer arrived in the 57th minute, courtesy of Neco Williams. The full-back hammered a first-time, right-footed shot inside the near post of Villa’s stand-in goalkeeper, Marco Bizot.
Williams emerged as Forest’s most potent attacking threat on the day. He saw another similar effort blocked later in the half, underlining his danger from advanced positions.
Villa’s afternoon was complicated before kick-off. First-choice goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez pulled out during the warm-up—the third such occurrence this season—forcing Marco Bizot into action. Defender Ezri Konsa, a stalwart for club and country, was also surprisingly dropped to the bench.
Despite the defensive reshuffle, Villa created the clearer chances. They should have put the game to bed in the first half. Ollie Watkins, fresh from a midweek brace in Europe but omitted from the latest England squad, was also guilty of a glaring miss. With 11 minutes of regular time remaining, substitute Emiliano Buendia sent him clean through on goal. Watkins lashed his effort high over the crossbar.
The chances kept coming for the visitors. Youri Tielemans dawdled after being teed up by Watkins, and Matty Cash saw a late effort blocked. It was a familiar story for Villa at the City Ground; this marks the fourth consecutive season they have failed to win here.
Forest, meanwhile, continued their season-long struggle to test opposition goalkeepers consistently. Manager Nuno Espírito Santo turned to veteran striker Chris Wood with almost half an hour to play, marking the 34-year-old’s first Premier League appearance since October.
Their best chance aside from Williams’ goal fell to Morgan Gibbs-White just after the hour mark. Gibbs-White latched onto a lay-off from Igor Jesus, and his rushed effort took a dangerous deflection off Matty Cash. Bizot reacted superbly, making a fine save with his left leg to keep the scores level.
Earlier, Sels had been called into action to deny Villa captain John McGinn, pushing a curled effort destined for the bottom corner around the post.
The final whistle brought one of the biggest cheers of the afternoon, not just for the point earned, but for the confirmation that results elsewhere had swung in Forest’s favor. For Villa, it was a case of what might have been, their European ambitions momentarily stalled by profligate finishing.
