Flavor Flav is taking the celebration to Sin City. The Hall of Fame rapper announced on X this Thursday that he’ll host a “She Got Game” weekend in Las Vegas from July 16-19, partnering with MGM Resorts to fete the US women’s ice hockey team’s gold medal victory at the Milano Cortina Olympics.
The 66-year-old Public Enemy founding member extended a formal invitation to the squad, promising dinners and shows for what he called “a real celebration.” He shared the email sent to players, underscoring his commitment to honoring female athletic achievement.
Flav’s Vegas plans land just days after the women’s team declined an invitation to attend Donald Trump’s State of the Union address on Tuesday. USA Hockey cited logistics and travel issues in politely turning down the offer, which would have seen them join the men’s gold medal-winning team at the event.
Trump extended the invitation late Sunday during a locker-room call congratulating the men’s team on their 2-1 overtime win over Canada. “We’re going to have to bring the women’s team, you do know that,” the president told the players, joking he’d “probably be impeached” if he didn’t include them.
The women’s squad had secured their own dramatic 2-1 overtime victory against Canada just three days earlier, mirroring the men’s scoreline. Flav’s announcement referenced Trump’s remarks, positioning the Vegas event as an alternative celebration.
Beyond the weekend bash, Flav launched a GoFundMe campaign to support US women’s Olympic medalists. “Many of y’all asked how you can support and donate to our female athletes and the celebrations,” he wrote on X. “So I created a Go Fund Me. I’m hopeful this can have an impact beyond the weekend and help those that represent the best of the US.”
The rapper has built a reputation as a staunch advocate for women’s sports. He served as official hype man for the US bobsleigh and skeleton teams at the Milano Cortina Games and previously backed the women’s water polo team at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Reuters sought comment from USA Hockey on whether the full 23-player roster would attend Flav’s Vegas event, but the organization did not immediately reply. The weekend aims to celebrate not just the hockey team’s gold but broader female Olympian and Paralympian achievements.
